City of Springfield begins tearing down dozens of homes on north side, citing risks of illegal activity

The City of Springfield has started to tear down dozens of homes that were considered risks for illegal activity.

In anticipation of the continually ongoing Rail Improvement Project, Springfield purchased 55 abandoned homes, hoping to tear them down to make room for the upcoming and active innovation.

But while the homes sat there, Springfield Public
Works Director, Dave Fuchs, said that illegal activity happened there.

This included homes being broken into by people stealing copper and squatters living in homes. Many of these homes are located on the North Side of Springfield, next to Lanphier High School and Robin Roberts Stadium.

Fuchs says that, ultimately, the tear-downs will be good for the neighborhood.
