UPDATE: Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon issued a report Monday, May 6, confirming the victim as 33 year-old Michael Newton, a Springfield resident. The Coroner confirms Newton died of a gunshot wound to his neck. The investigation continues.

At 6:00 PM Saturday night the Springfield Police Department encountered the suspect’s vehicle parked at a home in the 2400 area of Foxbridge Road, and thereafter alerted the County Sheriff’s Office. Following that, deputies reportedly searched the home and “made contact” with a resident, but did not locate the suspect. One witness was taken in for questioning and then released.

The SCSO reported they have a person of interest, but are still working to collect evidence and testimony.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office has reported one fatality in a shooting on Saturday afternoon.

At 2:50 PM, officers responding to a call at a mobile home park in the 1000 block of N. Edmond Street found a 33 year old Springfield male who had been struck by at least one bullet. Although he was transported immediately to St. John’s Hospital, the victim was declared dead at 3:21 PM.

No suspect was apprehended at the scene, though witnesses gave a description of the suspect’s vehicle and direction of travel to the authorities.

While the case is still under investigation, detectives responding to the scene learned the shooting could be related to an earlier incident on N. Wesley. Police are currently working to locate the suspect vehicle described by witnesses and its occupants.
