Sangamon County committee supports an extension of countywide moratorium on carbon dioxide pipeline projects

A Sangamon County committee is supporting an extension of a countywide moratorium on carbon dioxide pipeline projects.

The State Journal-Register reports the county’s zoning and land use committee met behind closed doors before approving a measure to extend the existing moratorium until at least December of 2023.

The move comes as the Navigator Heartland Greenway project seeks state approval to build a pipeline that would run through five states, a path that would cover 14 Illinois counties, including Sangamon.

Opponents say the project poses environmental and public safety hazards. The full county board would still have to vote to extend the moratorium.
