Illinois quick hits: Police seek crime spree suspects; record complaints made to state inspector; questionable spending reported

Police seek crime spree suspects

Chicago police are searching for a group of teens accused of committing 13 armed robberies during a five-hour crime spree Monday.

According to police, suspects exited a vehicle and approached victims on foot while displaying firearms. The victims were robbed at gunpoint of their personal possessions. The robbers are described as two to four Black males in their late teens.

Record complaints made to state inspector

A new report reveals a record number of complaints were received by the Illinois Office of the Executive Inspector General in the past year.

The agency released its fiscal year annual report showing “notable record highs,” including the number of received and reviewed complaints and the number of revolving door determinations issued.

The OEIG has jurisdiction over 170,000 state employees, appointees and officials in state government.

Questionable spending reported to attorney general

The founder of Illinois’ first Black-led, trans-led center for LGBTQ residents is at the center of an investigation into Brave Space Alliance’s finances. The board of directors announced they had submitted an independent accountant’s report to the Illinois attorney general’s office after conducting their own investigation.

The board accused the founder and former chief executive of allowing funds to be diverted into unknown bank accounts with “questionable spending.” Located in Hyde Park, the alliance provides basic services and has been vocal about the deaths of trans people in Chicago.
