Tragedy on I-55 sparks questions concerning civil and criminal liability for certain involved parties

In the aftermath of Monday’s deadly crash in a sudden dust storm south of Springfield, some people are questioning whether someone should be held civilly or criminally liable for the tragedy.

A personal injury law firm issued a statement suggesting that semi-drivers may not have followed federal regulations that call for them to pull over when travel conditions become hazardous.

And environmental groups suggest that poor soil management and farming practices contributed to the dust cloud that dropped visibility in the area to zero.

Illinois State Police say accident reconstructionists and forensic experts are looking at all available evidence, but say it’s too soon to determine if anyone could be ticketed or charged in connection with the crash.
