(Updated) Woman dead in early morning “deputy-involved” shooting

Update, July 6: The office of Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon has identified the woman shot at S. Hoover Ave. as Sonya Massey of Springfield. Preliminary findings from the Coroner’s report confirms that Massey died of a gunshot wound. She was 36 years old.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office reports that one person was killed in a shooting on Hoover Avenue early Saturday morning.

Authorities state that at 12:50 AM, two deputies were dispatched to the 2800 block of Hoover in response to calls about a “prowler” in the area.

Thirty minutes later, at 1:21 AM those deputies reported a shooting had occurred, with a woman having been struck by gunfire. The Sheriff’s Office told the press that the deputies administered first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, at which point the woman was transported to HSHS St. John’s. She was pronounced deceased after arriving at the hospital.

No further details are currently available about the nature of the shooting. The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office declared it has requested Illinois State Police conduct an independent investigation into the incident.
