Illinois lawmakers consider ditching Native American mascot names across the state’s schools

Illinois lawmakers are considering a bill to drop Native American mascot names from K-through-12 schools.

Researchers have said studies show that mascot
names such as Warriors and Indians harm Native American children.

State Representative Laura Faver Dias says Native American mascots dehumanize an entire group of people and have no place in schools.

If the bill passes, schools would be able to wait until they change sports uniforms or renovate their athletic facilities to comply with the law.
