Illinois quick hits: Pretrial Release Appeals Task Force announced; pill making equipment seized

Pretrial Release Appeals Task Force announced

The Illinois Supreme Court has announced the creation of the Pretrial Release Appeals Task Force.

As a result of the implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act in September 2023, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of appeals from pretrial release decisions by the circuit courts. The task force will convene to review pretrial release appeals and their impact on the caseloads in each of the five districts of the Illinois Appellate Courts.

The task force will hold its first meeting within the next 14 days.

Pill-making equipment seized

Federal authorities at O’Hare International Airport have seized shipments of pill-making equipment that they said could have ended up in possession of drug traffickers.

Officials said the equipment is used by traffickers to manufacture pills containing fentanyl. All the items came from China and were being sent to individual residences in five states, including Illinois.

Weekend crashes reported

Illinois State Police reported five crashes involving ISP squad cars over the weekend.

One of the incidents happened in Marion when a trooper assisting with a crash on Interstate 57 was struck. Police said the car had its emergency lights activated when a car driving by lost control and hit the rear of the squad car.

The 18-year-old driver was cited for violating the Move Over Law.
