WMAY’s Last Night-in-Sports Report: 10/04/2023

MLB playoff action yesterday in the Wild Card round in the AL, the Texas Rangers blanked the Rays in Tampa Bay 4-0 to take a 1-0 series lead.

Elsewhere, the Minnesota Twins got a rare postseason win 3-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays to go up 1-0 in their series. In the National League, the Arizona Diamondbacks went into Milwaukee and defeated the Brewers 6-3 to go up 1-0, while the Philadelphia Phillies took care of the Miami Marlins 4-1 to go up 1-0. Game 2 of each of those series takes place later today.

NHL preseason action last night at the United Center Corey Perry scored twice as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 in the final. Connor Murphy and rookie Connor Bedard also scored for the Hawks in the victory. Bedard also added two assists in the contest. The Hawks host the Minnesota Wild tomorrow night at the UC.

College football news: the Fighting Illini had a fire at Memorial Stadium last night. The fire broke out in the southwest corner underneath the horseshoe, away from spectator areas, the university said. The University is currently evaluating the damage.

The Illini are scheduled to host Nebraska Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
