Ford plant in Chicago the latest to join ever-intensifing UAW strike

UAW President Shawn Fain has decided to strike a Ford plant in Chicago as part of the union’s strategy of using targeted actions against specific automakers and facilities in response to the progress of negotiations.

Fain had taken only limited action against Ford last week, but didn’t say what had happened to make him change his mind.

The targeting of the Chicago assembly plant at 12600 S. Torrence Ave. is significant because it produces SUVs. The UAW had avoided striking plants that make trucks or SUVs, the most profitable vehicles American automakers sell.

This week, it was Stellantis who avoided escalation of the strike. Fain noted that there had been “significant progress” in talks with the company on issues like cost of living adjustments, crossing picket lines, and other issues.
