Illinois to relax renewal driver’s test rules for older citizens according to Sec. of State

The Illinois Secretary of State is relaxing rules for older drivers. Secretary Alexi Giannoulias proposed that the age at which a driver is required to pass a driver’s test before renewal be raised from 75 to 79.

The proposal would mean that beginning at age 79; drivers must complete a driving test as part of the regular license renewal process. Drivers aged 81 to 86 must renew their license and take a vision and driving test every two years, and drivers aged 87 and older must renew their license and take those tests every year.

Only Illinois requires that drivers over a certain age take additional driving tests and is one of 23 that require elderly drivers to renew more frequently.
