The city of Wilson, NC – with a population of about 50,000 – is experimenting with a small-scale, tech-based solution to public transportation that researchers believe could be replicated in many medium-sized cities like Springfield.
Wilson ended its bus service in 2020 and now offers on-demand van trips anywhere in town for just $2.50 per ride.
Ridership has surged 300% in Wilson while public transportation use fell in most of the country during the same time period. Wilson is expected to reintroduce some fixed-route bus service during peak demand.
