Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport cuts ribbon on new solar array to save money and reduce emissions

Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport has cut the ribbon on new solar arrays that officials say will save money and be much more environmentally friendly.

The six solar arrays will provide power both to the airport and to tenant businesses like Standard Aero.

The total cost of the project was $6 million. More than half that cost will be covered by solar renewable energy credits from the state of Illinois, as well as a power purchase agreement with Balance Solar, which helped to finance the project.

In return, the solar energy will reduce utility bills at the airport by $350,000 annually and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of eight million vehicle miles.
