The Springfield school board has adopted an equity plan that sets some ambitious goals for the next several years.

The goal of the plan is to provide more equitable opportunities for learning and growth, for students, families, and staff. One of the stated targets in the plan is for minority hiring to come into compliance with standards set out in the federal desegregation order for Springfield schools.

That would require having nearly 20% of the district’s teaching staff be African American by the spring of 2026, which lines up with the minority population of the community from the 2020 Census.

Right now, only 7% of the district’s teachers are Black.
