Springfield Mayor Buscher wants to keep ShotSpotter technology around city for three more years, despite pushback

Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher wants to keep the city’s ShotSpotter technology around for a while.

The system uses microphones placed in high-crime areas of the city to alert police to possible gunfire, allowing them to get to a scene and tend to potential victims more quickly. The system has been criticized in some communities for generating too many false reports.

But Buscher is seeking authorization to renew the contract for three more years, at a total cost of $870,000.

Aldermen will discuss the proposal later this month.
