West Nile virus is back in Illinois – and it has shown up in Morgan County

The Illinois Department of Public Health says the virus has been detected in mosquitoes in four counties so far this year, including Morgan.

While no human cases have been found yet in 2023, last year saw 34 human cases – with many more that likely went unreported.

Eight deaths were linked to West Nile last year, making it the deadliest year for the virus in Illinois since 2018.

Health officials are encouraging the public to “Fight the Bite” by taking steps to prevent mosquito bites, including use of insect repellent and wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors.
