Illinois State Representative Coffey wants bills passed during waking hours

A local lawmaker wants to make sure the General Assembly conducts its business in the daylight – literally.

Republican state Representative Mike Coffey says he plans to introduce legislation to limit final legislative votes on bills to between 8 am and 8 pm.

Coffey made the comments during a telephone town hall with constituents this week, a copy of which was made available to WMAY.

He says key legislation, such as the state budget, should not be approved well after midnight, when most people impacted by it are sound asleep.

Coffey says he plans to introduce other reform bills, too, including making the General Assembly subject to the state Open Meetings Act.
