Springfield alderpeople want to crack down on chronic problem of fly-dumping

Springfield aldermen want to crack down on the chronic problem of fly-dumping.

The problem took center stage at Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting, as aldermen discussed a large amount of trash, mattresses, and appliances being dumped in the vicinity of homes along North Grand Avenue that are slated for demolition to make way for the new railroad overpass.

Some want to see more use of cameras, license plate readers, and even drones to look for illegal dumpers, and are also calling for much steeper fines – up to as much as $1,000 per offense from the current $100.
