Illinois State officials say large number of people, government and private servers around the world could be impacted by recent global ransomeware attack

State officials say a large number of people may be impacted by a massive global ransomware attack that targeted government and private servers around the world – including Illinois government computer systems.

The Department of Innovation and Technology – DoIT – says the hackers exploited a vulnerability in a widely-used file transfer system in an attempt to gain access to private information.

The attack on May 31 was detected within minutes, and steps were taken to shut it down, but officials say they are still assessing the extent of the data breach.

The department is notifying affected individuals and will offer a complete assessment of the incident once the investigation is complete.
