Illinois insurance companies no longer allowed to raise rates or deny home insurance policies based on specific dog breeds beginning mostly in December

Illinois insurance companies will no longer be allowed to raise rates or cancel policies for homeowners based on the breed of dog they own.

Until now, insurance companies could alter rates or deny coverage if they viewed a particular breed as “dangerous.” The new law says that companies can take action if a specific dog is found dangerous or vicious but cannot act against particular dog breeds in general.

Most provisions of the new law take effect in December.
