Macon County officials believe they found a caiman in a Decatur backyard – are still investigating incident

Officials in Macon County are still trying to figure out what kind of reptile they retrieved from a Decatur yard – and how it got there.

Animal control officers were called to the home for a report of what appeared to be a three-foot-long alligator. Officials were able to safely retrieve and contain the animal, which they say could be a caiman, a different type of reptile that resembles a gator.

They have no idea how the reptile got there and are investigating to see if it was obtained and brought into the area illegally.

The animal has been turned over to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
