State Senator McClure among Illinois state officials clamoring for state to take care of volunteer firefighters after deadly I-55 pileup

Some Illinois lawmakers say last week’s deadly pileup crash on Interstate 55 shows the need for the state to take better care of volunteer firefighters, who step up to respond to dangerous incidents like that one.

The lawmakers – including Republican state Senator Steve McClure of Springfield – are calling for a $500 state tax credit for volunteer firefighters.

Supporters say it’s a small but meaningful way to show appreciation and to address a critical shortage of volunteer firefighters.

Federal data says 85% of Illinois fire protection districts rely on volunteers to respond to emergencies.
