Illinois’s assault weapons ban is back in effect again – for now

Illinois’s assault weapons ban is back in effect again for now, after a federal appeals court issued a stay against a lower court ruling that temporarily blocked the ban.

Federal Judge Stephen McGlynn issued an injunction last week against the Illinois law that prohibits the sale of assault-style weapons and large-capacity magazines, saying the law threatened to do irreparable harm to individual gun rights and to gun shops.

But the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals issued the stay and gave the parties until May 9 to submit briefs in response to the ruling.
