A second Illinois prison guard has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars for his role in a violent assault that resulted in the death of an inmate.

54-year-old Todd Sheffler is the second of three employees of the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mt. Sterling to be sentenced in the death of Larry Earvin.

The three guards assaulted Earvin as he was being transported to a segregation unit while restrained and handcuffed behind his back.

Sheffler’s first trial ended in a mistrial, but at his second trial he was convicted of multiple charges, including deprivation of civil rights, conspiracy, and obstruction.

Another guard, Alex Banta, got a 20-year sentence last week, and the third defendant, Willie Hedden, will be sentenced Wednesday in Springfield.
