Illinois Supreme Court rules against White Castle in biometric privacy case

White Castle is the latest company facing a large potential judgment for alleged violations of Illinois’s biometric privacy law.
The Illinois Supreme Court has ruled that the fast-food chain could be liable for every time it scanned the fingerprints of employees without their permission.
White Castle had argued that it should only face liability for the first time it used the fingerprint scan, not each subsequent use.
The company says the ruling means it could potentially be on the hook for billions of dollars.
The case now returns to a lower court for further action.
