AFSCME Wants More Steps To Protect Prison Guards, Inmates

Even though an investigation turned up no sign of narcotics at the scene of the incident that sent more than 20 Illinois prison workers to the hospital, the union representing those workers says the dangers from drug contraband are real.

In a statement, AFSCME says more investigation is needed to determine what caused the “very real” symptoms that the workers at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro experienced. And it says the next such incident may not be a “false alarm,” so it’s calling on the Department of Corrections to equip prisons with the ability to identify potentially hazardous substances more quickly.

The department says it found baby powder and nasal spray at the scene. Everyone who experienced symptoms has now been released from the hospital.
