Gill Sees Encouraging Signs In School Report Card Data

Illinois school report card data shows students are still feeling the effects of learning loss from the pandemic… but District 186 superintendent Jennifer Gill says there are hopeful signs in the data.

The number of students who are “proficient” at their grade level, meaning they meet the state standards for achievement in that subject, remains alarmingly low, with only 21-percent of District 186 students proficient in English language arts and 15-percent in math. But the rate of growth… showing how students are progressing compared to their peers at the same academic level… shows more improvement, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Only eight Springfield schools are in “improvement” status now because of low test scores, compared to 14 prior to COVID. Gill says it may take three to five years to fully rebound from the effects of the pandemic.
