Bill Would Hold Parents Criminally Liable For Minor Child’s Gun Crimes

An Illinois lawmaker has introduced legislation to hold parents criminally liable if they so-sign an application for their minor child to obtain a FOID card, and the child then commits a crime with that gun.

Republican Representative Mark Batinick says his legislation would add an extra layer of accountability and would require parents to make sure their child is properly trained and mentally fit to handle a firearm before signing off on their ability to obtain one.

The bill follows the recent mass shooting in Highland Park, where the suspected shooter obtained a FOID card when he was underage after his father sponsored his application.
