Illinois Lawmakers See Support Growing For Action On Assault Weapons, High-Capacity Magazines

Some Illinois lawmakers say momentum is growing for a ban on military-style semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines in the aftermath of the deadly mass shooting this month in Highland Park.

A bill to ban so-called assault weapons failed to get enough votes for passage last spring in the Illinois General Assembly, but the bill’s sponsor tells the Chicago Sun-Times that more lawmakers are now open to the idea.

Police say the suspect in the deadly attack used a weapon similar to an AR-15, and used three 30-round magazines to carry out the attack.
