Study: Gambling Problems Impact Hundreds Of Thousands Of Illinoisans

More than a million Illinoisans… over ten-percent of the state’s adult population… either have a gambling problem or are at risk of developing one.

That’s according to a new assessment on gambling in Illinois conducted by the state Department of Human Services. The study found that 68-percent of Illinoisans reported gambling in some form in the past year, with the lottery being the most popular method.

With the expansion of legalized gambling, the state is also seeing an increase in people seeking help for gambling issues. The state has allocated $10 million in the current fiscal year to expand access to treatment programs.
