Route 66 Grant Will Fund Local Augmented/Virtual Reality Attraction

A million-dollar state grant will help fund several local projects to promote Route 66… including a new augmented reality and virtual reality attraction.

The $1.1 million for the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau is one of several grants around the state to promote the legendary highway. Springfield’s funding will create what’s being called the Route 66 Interactive Metaverse exhibit, which will use high-tech augmented and virtual reality to tell the experiences of Black families who traveled the Mother Road back in the day.

Some of the money will also be used for the Route 66 exhibit and neon sign display being developed at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
