Grant To Fund Training For Child Welfare Workers And Advocacy Center Staff

The University of Illinois Springfield is getting a big federal grant to expand training programs for child welfare workers… including training on what to do if they encounter a violent situation.

UIS has worked under a contract with the Department of Children and Family Services to provide such training to front-line investigators and supervisors. The new $720,000 grant will allow that training to expand to staffers at child advocacy centers around the state.

The simulation includes how to handle a situation where a parent becomes threatening during a home visit… a scenario that has taken on new importance after the murder of a child welfare worker at a Thayer home in January.
