Spaulding Considers Disbanding Its Police Department

The village of Spaulding will consider a proposal in the days ahead to disband its police department.

Spaulding Mayor Bill Hinkle says the village is tight on cash, and could save $100,000 a year by having Riverton take over policing and patrol responsibilities for Spaulding. Spaulding has one officer that works 40 hours a week and a handful of part-time officers who only work a few hours per month. Hinkle says Riverton would hire the main Spaulding officer and purchase Spaulding’s police vehicles.

Hinkle says the arrangement would provide 24-7 police coverage of the village, something he says Spaulding does not have right now. The village board will hold a special meeting Tuesday to discuss the plan.
