Referendum Seeks To Dissolve Clearlake Village

The tiny Sangamon County village of Clearlake is once again trying to put itself out of business.

Village officials have submitted paperwork for a referendum on the June primary ballot to dissolve Clearlake, a town of around 200 people that sits between Interstate 72 and Old Route 36 east of Springfield. Village clerk Dawn Morgan says the community needs road repairs and other work done, but does not have the tax revenue to do it. Dissolving the village would allow those responsibilities to be assumed by Clear Lake Township or by Sangamon County.

The June referendum will only be open to residents of the village. It’s not the first attempt to dissolve Clearlake. A referendum in 2015 failed by just two votes.
