Aldermen Continue to Debate Fire Department Equipment, Construction Needs

With a final budget vote just days away, Springfield aldermen are still wrestling with how much to spend on major fire department needs.

The department is seeking more than $5 million to replace some of its aging fleet of vehicles… but the budget also proposes spending up to $12 million to build four new firehouses. Aldermen are questioning whether the city can afford to do that all at once, and whether either the vehicle or firehouse request, or both, should be scaled back.

A public hearing on the budget is set for Tuesday, with a final vote expected one week later.
