Illinois State Police say a crackdown on shootings and carjackings on Chicago expressways is paying dividends.
There were 24 homicides on Chicago expressways last year, and in October, state police announced a heightened effort to combat such crimes, using air support, license plate readers, and other technology. Since then, police have charged 20 individuals with crimes ranging from first-degree murder and attempted murder to aggravated discharge of a firearm and vehicular hijacking.
State police say the message is clear that if people engage in criminal activity on major highways, they will be identified, caught, and prosecuted.
