Winter Storm Winds Down, But Travel Difficulties Persist; Many Schools Closed Again Friday

The debilitating winter storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow on the Springfield area is drawing to a close.
Springfield had seen more than ten inches of snow by Thursday morning, with more falling into the afternoon, creating enormous travel headaches across the area. State police dealt with multiple accidents up and down Interstate 55, including several involving semis. Although the snow is ending, gusty winds and bitter cold temperatures will keep many roads snow-covered and potentially hazardous over the next several days. District 186 has called off classes for Friday, the third straight snow day which will have to be made up at the end of the school year in June. And the Springfield City Council postponed a planned budget hearing that had been scheduled for Thursday evening. It will now be held next Monday.
