The More Things Change

For a brief 4 hour period there was hope among Chicago Bears fandom as the Bears had not only fired head coach Matt Nagy but had also jettisoned GM Ryan Pace as well. Bears fans felt as if a seismic change was finally coming from an organization that has been stuck in its ways for far too long and then at 1p Monday afternoon all that hope vanished in an instant as team chairman George McCaskey conducted a clinic on how not to handle a press conference.
McCaskey began earnest enough offering his condolences to the family of esteemed Chicago Bears beat writer Jeff Dickerson who had recently passed away after a battle with cancer at the age of just 44. Ol’ George than used that as a launching point to admonish high school kids who started a “Fire Nagy” chant at a high school football playoff game in which one of Nagy’s sons was playing in. The chant was in poor taste but so was McCaskey’s use of Dickerson’s death as a segue.
It didn’t get any better from there as for the next hour McCaskey provided drops like “ I am just a fan not a talent evaluator” and espoused the wisdom of Bill Polian and treated Polian’s 2014 book as if it was some type of ancient text that could lead the Bears to the promise land. Sorry to break it to you George but if you are just a fan then why the hell are you going to be the one doing the hiring of football people? Oh that’s right it is because your family owns the team.  Also while Polian is a legendary front office figure in the NFL he is 79 years old and his last hot take was that MVP QB Lamar Jackson should move to RB or WR if he wants to make it into the NFL.
Yet with all of this it is still going to be George, Bill, and Ted Phillips leading the way in finding the next era of Chicago Bears football. Yes the same team that brought you Marc Trestman, John Fox, Matt Nagy, and Ryan Pace are asking you the Bears fan to trust them to get it right this time. It is almost as if the Bears are the living embodiment of the definition of insanity.
