Illinois lawmakers will try again this year to raise the legal age for purchasing and consuming tobacco to 21.

The bill passed the General Assembly last year but was vetoed by then-Governor Bruce Rauner. Democratic State Senator Julie Morrison has reintroduced the bill this year in hopes that new Governor J.B. Pritzker will sign it if it reaches his desk.

Supporters say making young people wait until later before they use tobacco lowers the chance that they will start using it at all.
