The list of Illinois’ most monumental moments is mostly tied to Abraham Lincoln with three of the top five all having ties to the state’s favorite son.
Chris Wills with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum says bicentennial best-of voters chose Lincoln’s death as the state’s most significant moment.
"Obviously, Lincoln’s death was a tragic occasion and a sad occasion," Wills said. "But it’s one that made a big difference to this state."
Wills said voters also put Illinois’ abolition of slavery and the Lincoln-Douglas debates in the top five as well.
"That gives you some insight what an impact that single man had on this state," Wills added.
Voters ranked the Cubs World Series win second on the list. The fourth top moment was Lewis and Clark’s departure from the Metro East.
This is the last list for voters, the full Top 200 list is available at IllinoisTop200.com.
