Springfield man arrested in connection with fatal shooting in city last week

A Springfield man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting last week.

37-year-old Jerry Stegall was taken into custody at a residence in Alton and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Aaron Cutler.

Cutler was fatally shot, and another man was wounded during an altercation on May 31 in the 300 block of South Paul Street. Stegall was returned to Springfield and is being held in the Sangamon County Jail on $2 million bond.

Sheriff Jack Campbell says detectives are still looking into whether other individuals were involved in the homicide or in helping Stegall flee the area.
