Owner of Murphy Farms facing federal charges stemming from multi-million dollar fraud scheme

A Cass County man is facing federal charges in connection with a multi-million dollar fraud scheme.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office accuses 40-year-old Travis Murphy of Chandlerville of fraudulently obtaining more than $8 million in bank loans through his business, Murphy Farms.

Prosecutors say he overstated the value of his property, crops, and income in order to obtain the loans. After obtaining the loans and then defaulting on payment, they say Murphy took crops that had been put up as collateral and sold them outside the terms of the loan agreement.

He’s also accused of using the same inflated property values in a bankruptcy petition.

The most serious charge, bank fraud, carries a possible penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
