Springfield continues to replace lead water lines, but has thousands more to remedy

The City of Springfield is making progress on replacing water lines that contain lead – but still has a long way to go to complete the job.

Two loans from the state have allowed the city to replace nearly 1,000 lead water service lines, out of a total of around 10,000.

City Water Light and Power is seeking additional state funds to continue the project, but no decision is expected until next year.

Springfield stopped using lead in its water service lines around 1930, but a number of older homes continue to be serviced by lines containing the potential hazard.
