Approved Illinois legislation would require all schools to develop policies on racial discrimination and harassment

Illinois schools would be required to develop policies on racial discrimination and harassment – and would have to keep track of all such incidents – under legislation approved last week by the General Assembly.

The main sponsor, Democratic state Representative Maurice West, says incidents of hate and racism are on the rise across the country, and action must be taken to stop that rising tide.

If signed by Governor JB Pritzker, the new law would take effect with the 2024-25 school year and would apply to all public, private, parochial, and charter schools in the state.
