Newly-approved Illinois state budget could very well mark start of the end of Capitol Complex

The newly-approved state budget could mark the beginning of the end of part of the Capitol Complex.

The budget includes a $50 million appropriation for demolition of the Stratton Office Building adjacent to the Capitol, and design and construction of a new legislative office building to replace it.

The nearly 70-year-old Stratton is considered outdated and even unsafe. But the inclusion of the line item isn’t a guarantee that work to replace it will get underway in the next fiscal year.
