Ground is broken on new $10 million civil engineering complex for Springfield’s Air National Guard unit

Ground has been broken on a new $10 million Base Civil Engineer complex that could mark the beginning of a new era for Springfield’s Air National Guard unit.

The 183rd Wing will consolidate several operations into the new facility at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport.

Since the unit lost its fighter jets more than a decade ago, it’s been evolving into a support role for a variety of military operations.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher joined other dignitaries and National Guard officials for the groundbreaking ceremony.
