Voting by mail is surging in Sangamon County for next month’s local elections. County Clerk Don Gray says more than 8,000 mail-in ballots have already been returned and validated, and another 12,000 ballots have been mailed out to voters but not yet returned.

During the last local election in 2019, fewer than 9,000 mail-in ballots were requested, and around 7,600 were returned. Gray says giving voters the option of being on a permanent vote-by-mail list is contributing to a significant shift in voting habits.

At the same time, early in-person voting is down 23% from the same time four years ago.
