Springfield Mayor Langfelder hopes to add residency requirement for city police union

Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder is hoping to add a residency requirement for new hires under the last remaining union contract with the city that doesn’t have such a provision.
The city is currently in contract talks with the police union on a new contract.
Since 2016, the city has gradually re-imposed the residency requirement that had been repealed by aldermen more than a decade earlier.
The police department is now the only city department that doesn’t have such a requirement for new hires.
Appearing live on WMAY, Langfelder said that property taxes are the main funding source for city pensions, so it only makes sense for those workers to contribute to those pensions by living in the city and paying property taxes.
If approved in the ongoing contract negotiations, the provision would not apply to existing workers who already live outside the city limits.
