A celebrated, but also controversial, Illinois sports figure has died. Former Chicago Blackhawks star Bobby Hull passed away Monday at the age of 84.

Hull was part of the Blackhawks team that won the Stanley Cup in 1961, and in 1966 he became only the third NHL player to score more than 50 goals in a season.

But off the ice, Hull ran into various bits and bouts of trouble, with accusations of spousal abuse and a conviction for assaulting a police officer who tried to intervene in a domestic dispute in 1986 – and had a history of saying some rather unfortunate things.

Hull became an “ambassador” for the Blackhawks in 2010, but the team ended that arrangement last year.
