State public health officials are warning that yet another new variant of the COVID virus is starting to show up more frequently in Illinois – even as COVID numbers have improved recently.
The official name of the variant is XBB 1.5, but it’s being referred to as the “Kraken” variant because of its contagiousness – as well as the potential magnitude of danger that could present.
The Illinois Department of Public Health says that while cases of the variant are increasing, it’s not yet leading to an increase in hospitalizations.
Furthermore, health officials are saying that the current iteration of the bivalent booster shot appears to be effective against this “Kraken” variant as well.
Additional information concerning this pressing issue will be published as it becomes available and verifiable.
